Car Insurance And Your Needs

You can't go without car insurance, you simply can't. It's not just that it's the law, that's important, but there's much more to it than that. Even deciding to venture out just one day on the road while uninsured is taking a very expensive gamble. One bad move can cost you more than you own. Here, we're going to go through a few factors and sides of insurance for you to consider when purchasing.

First is liability. Liability insurance is the bare minimum that all states in the US require for you to be moving down the road. It does not cover you. It covers the other party in the accident if you are to blame. Typically, liability will consist of bodily injury for the other people involved in the accident as well. Many choose to go this route because it is simply a far cheaper option. But again, the problem is that you are not covered at all if you're to blame, only the other party in the accident. You're left with your damage car and your insurance rates going up.

The more expensive, but also safer way to go when considering what insurance to buy is a collision policy. These policies will foot the bill for your repairs should an accident occur. But, there is always a twist. If you have an older car, and get in an accident, chances are that the cost of repairs to that car will be higher than the value of the car itself. In this situation, most insurance companies will opt to give you the cost of the worth of your car instead of paying for repairs. This is where the term 'totaled' comes from. Meaning that the car is a total loss.

On the other hand, there are ways that you can save a good amount of money when shopping around. First off, ask your realtives and friends who they're insured with. What do they like/dislike about their insurance company? How much do they pay? What type of policy do they have? But don't ask just anyone. Ask the friends or relatives that are doing well. That seem to have it together. See what they have to say about the subject.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many insurance providers will offer a substantial discount to those with a great driving record. If you haven't had an accident or speeding ticket in the last 5 years, you may well qualify. Get lots of quotes from various companies and always ask them about this.

And lastly, think through the car you're getting or currently have. Insurers know what costs more. If you're driving an expensive car that will be expensive to repair, they're going to charge you your premium accordingly. They know what gets stolen and they know what's likely to lead to an accident. You'll be more likely to get a great deal insuring a modest, reliable and non-flashy car. Also, taking the time to update your car, and make it as safe and low maintenance as possible can typically ensure a lower premium.
